Landlord and Tenant Board: Eviction and Notice Rules Changed on September 21, 2026
The N4 notice period for unpaid rent is now 7 days, tenants must pay half the arrears before raising other issues at an arrears hearing, and the N12 and N13 rules have changed.
LTB Changes from July 2026: 15 Days to Request a Review and Higher Fines
Since July 1, 2026 the deadline to ask the LTB to review an order is 15 days, repayment plans must use the LTB Payment Agreement Form, and maximum fines for offences have doubled.
Ontario Rent Increase Guideline for 2027 Is 1.9%
The most a landlord can raise the rent for most Ontario tenants in 2027 without LTB approval is 1.9%, down from 2.1% in 2026.
Small Claims Court: One Year with the $50,000 Limit
Since October 1, 2025, Ontario Small Claims Court can hear claims of up to $50,000, up from $35,000.
Bill C-12 Is Law: New Limits on Which Refugee Claims Go to the IRB
Bill C-12 received royal assent on March 26, 2026. Some refugee claims made more than one year after entering Canada, or more than 14 days after crossing between ports of entry, are no longer referred to the IRB.

An IRB practice notice on artificial intelligence took effect September 7, 2026, and new Refugee Protection Division Rules have been proposed but are not yet in force.
Speed Camera Tickets Ended in Ontario on November 14, 2025
Since November 14, 2025, Ontario municipalities can no longer issue tickets or penalty orders for speeding caught by automated speed enforcement cameras.
