Questions

Before you come in

What is the difference between a notary public and a commissioner of oaths?

A commissioner administers the oath or declaration on an affidavit or statutory declaration. A notary public can do that and can also certify true copies and notarize signatures, which is usually what organizations outside Ontario ask for. Tell us where the document is going and we will tell you which one you need.

When do I pay?

After your appointment. You save a card when you book, and it is charged once your document is signed. You can cancel or reschedule online up to 2 hours before the appointment at no charge.

Will you explain or check my document?

Commissioning and notarizing confirm who you are and that you signed, swore or declared in front of us. They do not include legal advice about what the document says. If you need a document prepared, call first and we will tell you whether it is something we can draft.

Can you help me get an apostille?

Yes. Apostilles for Ontario documents are issued by Official Documents Services (ODS). We notarize or certify your document, prepare it for ODS, and help you through the application. Ask us for a quote, since the steps depend on the document.

My country does not accept apostilles. What then?

Some countries still require legalization by their embassy or consulate in Canada. We help you get documents such as powers of attorney, declarations and certified copies attested or legalized by the right embassy or consulate. Tell us the country and we will explain the steps and give you a quote.

Do you help with anything beyond notary work?

Yes. ProSeek Legal Services is a licensed paralegal practice. We represent clients at the Landlord and Tenant Board, in Small Claims Court, on traffic tickets and at the Immigration and Refugee Board. Legal consultations are booked separately. See our Services page.
